Artist Statement

In Jan 2011, I visited the Yucatan Peninsula. I've always been fascinated with ancient culture and to see these in person was like visiting another world. It was, actually, visiting another world. This was not the world I am from, not even my ancestors. We know far less than we think we do about the people who built and abandoned these structures. I could be wrong but I have this elaborate egocentric fantasy that I understand them. Years after some of the claims I've made, archaeologists start to discover my predictions. So I might be 90% insane but I'm at least 10% right. The feeling I got was that if they could have taken them down, they would have. We are not meant to see the remains of this civilization. Being there felt like trespassing on someone else's repressed memories. But that didn't stop me from jumping the fence and going where I wasn't supposed to go. There is a lesson for us that these people leave buried in the forgotten landmarks. We're not going to learn it. Instead we're going to buy trinkety souvenirs on the way back to the hotel (I bought a cool mask thingy). But it's there if you look.
