...She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
I thought you'd never say hello, she said
You look like the silent type
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And everyone of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin' coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul
From me to you
Tangled up in blue...

Synopsis by the artist
Some people take Dylan's work at face value. Maybe they're right. But he's often enough encrypted larger than life legends into plain clothed characters to make me suspicious of any one of his songs. Is it a love story told in the first person? Or is it about someone's journey in and out of spiritualism? I'm not claiming to know.
Either way, I can't hear Bob say, "a book of poems written by an Italian poet in the 13th century" and not assume it's the Bible.
